Thanks to the drainage at Egremont Rugby, Cockermouth u11s managed to get a game of rugby in this morning. After a challenging hail storm, it turned into a bright sunny morning.
Having missed a few games and training sessions Cockermouth looked pretty rusty at the start of the game. Sloppy tackling, broken lines in defence and poor clear outs at the breakdown allowed Egremont to get on the front foot and score a few tries.
As the game went on, the Cockermouth team improved in all areas of the game. Increased line speed and more physical rucking created pressure on the Egremont team and more possession for Cockermouth.
Notable play came from Robbie’s barnstorming runs and clever off loads, great support runs from Ollie and Samson onto the off loaded ball, strong last line of defence tackles from Owain, Dan’s quick passing away from the tackle area. Footwork and overall work rate from Jude, Freddie, Alfie and Lucas. Strong running and deft footwork from Bobby.
This improved play allowed Cockermouth to finish the game positively scoring a few late tries.
The player of the match was Max Bateson. He worked hard in defence and attack and made many yards with ball in hand and looked to offload to team mates in space.
Areas for improvement include - keeping a defensive line as we move forward to create pressure, getting players to look for team mates in space and to take enjoyment from creating tries for team mates.
Thanks goes to Egremont for their friendly welcome and hospitality.
Cheers Brian
