Weekend Update

U9s

“The struggle is just the same! This morning, Cockermouth Under 9's clashed with Whitehaven in a spirited Rugby match. It was a joy to witness these young lads giving it their all, fueled by the encouragement of parents and grandparents, under the guidance of dedicated coaches. Great camaraderie on display with Hot dogs back in the clubhouse to reward there efforts. Well done all.” Wasps supporter Vince Brand.

North U18s 32 - South West England 32

“Well done to Isaac Murray & Finley Reed representing Cumbria playing in the North England game V South West England in an end to end game coming out a draw 32 all.
Well done lads you have done your club, County and North England proud".
Colts & Cumbria U18 Coach S Reed

“Super proud Mum & Dad, end to end game coming away with a draw 32-32. Finn scored a cracking try & a try assist. So proud. #upthewasps ????” Colts team manager & committee member K Reed

Cockermouth 12 - Upper Eden 27

The first team got off to another cracking start and dominated the opening 20mins of the match. The players have worked really hard improving their attacking shape, ultimately our lack of points as cost us dear this season, and they put Upper Eden under a lot of pressure. The players were much more composed and built phases really well. BUT a number of tries were left out on the pitch and when captain Ant Davies scored, converted by Jamie Preston we hoped more would follow. Unfortunately the dominance finished and Upper Eden would work themselves back into the game. Frustrating the home side aided this with some bad discipline and poor decisions. Firstly offside at the ruck led to a lineout and driving maul try and then soon after the referee accidentally got in full back Ed Gates way for a clearance kick from a ruck. This delay was seized upon by upper Eden back row who charged the kick down, in the panic the covering Wasps players lost the ball and Upper Eden took at 7-12 lead. At half time the message was to quicken up the ball, hit a few more attacking lines and play with a bit more depth. We need to replicate the start and take a few more tries.
The second half kicked off into poor playing conditions with the rain coming down heavy. Unfortunately it was Upper Eden who got the better start and home side were guilty of switching off in D and losing the ball too easily in attack. The away side capitalised on this, firstly from a dominant scrum and secondly from the scrum half recognising a big gap in the ruck defence. With the rain heavy and the score line at 7-27 as we know from the Wasps, they don’t give up and their credit finished the better side. Playing some expansive rugby with high skill. This eventually led to a good support try from Ollie Swain who backed up great work from Ben Irving down the right hand side.

“I thought our basic skills in that weather were really good. Tough conditions and we kept the ball for long periods (at times).
I know we’ve been saying it’s close for a while, but it genuinely is. Those first 20 minutes on Saturday were completely dominating, but, we should have been 2/3tries up.” Stand off Jamie Preston

They were good performances from a number of players but Liam Mcavoy playing at 8 was excellent in attack and defence and took the mom award.
